This also really happened. A lawyer at work referred to INXS as "I En Ex Ess" and pronounced REM in one syllable in the same sentence. You're sure hip, daddy-o.
"Sitting On the Dock of the Bay" is, of course, the legendary Otis Redding. On Saturday Night Live, they once did a funny skit about "I know how they wrote that song". Classic Otis moment: Duckie imitating Otis in "Pretty in Pink".
As for the Holy Modal Rounders, they're pretty obscure. Their biggest claim to fame is "The Bird" song from the Easy Rider soundtrack in 1969, which goes "If ya wanna be a bird..." then gets cut off.
